Our Sound, Our Salmon Campaign.
In spring 2017, Our Sound, Our Salmon formed a collaborative campaign of businesses, commercial fishers, conservation organizations, and individuals across the Puget Sound Region with the goal of working together to protect Puget Sound from Atlantic salmon net pen aquaculture.
In 2018, following the Cypress Island collapse that released 300,000 nonnative Atlantic salmon into Puget Sound, the campaign grew into a powerful grassroots movement that included over 100 businesses and organizations and over 12,000 supporters in less than a year all signing onto the Our Sound, Our Salmon petition to Governor Inslee.
At a time when salmon aquaculture is a growing risk throughout the world, this diverse coalition went on to successfully advocate for the world’s largest legislative phase out of Atlantic salmon net pens. On March 22, 2018, the world watched as Governor Jay Inslee signed into law EHB 2957, a bipartisan bill effectively banning Atlantic salmon net pens in Puget Sound by 2024.
Thank you to everyone who supported the Our Sound, Our Salmon campaign, including the businesses and organizations below, who made this landmark environmental victory possible.
