Protect Puget Sound’s Wild Salmon and Southern Resident Killer Whales from the Threat of PRV (Piscine Reovirus)
We, as a collaborative campaign of businesses, commercial fishermen, conservation organizations, and individuals, believe it is critical that the following actions be completed by Washington state agencies before spring 2019. These actions and timeline are necessary to assure the public that outmigrating juvenile salmonids will not be harmed by exposure to PRV from Puget Sound's remaining net pens, exposure that would undermine efforts to recover Pacific salmon species and, consequently, the endangered Southern Resident killer whales that rely on their abundance:
1. Immediately complete impartial state-conducted PRV sampling and testing of all currently stocked Atlantic salmon net pens in Puget Sound
2. Remove all farmed Atlantic salmon that test positive for PRV from Washington waters
3. Disinfect and adequately fallow all net pens that previously held PRV-infected fish PRV-infected fish
If you agree that these actions are necessary to protect wild salmon and Southern Resident killer whales, please add your name to the petition below. Businesses/ organizations and individuals are encouraged to sign on.
If you have any questions about the campaign, please feel free to contact us.
The Our Sound, Our Salmon campaign is coordinated by the Wild Fish Conservancy. We will occasionally send you emails related to this campaign and our organization's related work on wild fish restoration and research.
